The RCA New-Member Orientation is open to all
members. We will give a quick overview of all the benefits that come from
being a Rose City Astronomer, and general joys of being an amateur
astronomer. We all began as a newbie once; We will share
some of our memories of getting into this fine hobby and into the RCA in
Monday, May 20th -
The title of the new members meeting this
month will be "Galaxology 101". Spring time is a great season for
observing galaxies. These dim, distant objects are often favored both for
visual observing and imaging. This session, starting at 6:30 in the
Planetarium, will focus on galaxies, beginning with a discussion of the
Milky Way, and how the evolving history of observing it has changed our
concept of the size of the universe. We'll spend a few minutes talking
about the structure of galaxies in general. Finally, we'll consider
navigating around the Virgo supercluster, which is high in the sky for
best viewing now.
The new member meetings are designed to meet the needs of new members, but
everyone is invited.
Calendar for the next meeting
We usually hold theses meetings just
before the General Meetings in January, March, May, July, September
After a welcome and introduction to
the club by our President David Nemo, the topic of the new members meeting
March 18th will be "Messier Marathon".
This session, starting at 6:30 in the Planetarium, will be about who
Messier was and why the March timeframe is the best time to search
for the items on his list of 110 objects that he documented in the
late 18th century.
The new member meetings are designed to meet the needs of new
members, but everyone is invited.
There will be plenty of time for Q & A, so if
you've got questions, bring them to the
next new members' meeting.
